Bush-Coleman policies have caused major setbacks for concentrated poverty
Nobody should really be surprised by this, but a new study by the Brookings Institution confirms that we have been slipping when it comes to reducing pockets of concentrated poverty. The Star Tribune reports:
Gains made in the 1990s toward loosening pockets of poverty in metropolitan areas have started to erode, according to a new report.
“The trend is that we have lost some ground against concentrated poverty,” said Elizabeth Kneebone, senior research analyst for the Brookings Institution.
You should be disgusted, but I hope you’re not surprised. Bush has made rolling back the social contract one of the goals of his presidency, and he’s had remarkable success. Not only that, he’s actually tranferred money to the wealthiest Americans by slashing taxes for the top 1 percent and making up the shortfall by cutting social services and investments in infrastructure. This is more evidence that our Republican government has decided to kill the American dream–if you’re rich, you’ll stay rich, and if you’re poor, you’ll stay poor.
