Ritchie appoints Republican judges to recount panel

Mark Ritchie appointed his recount panel yesterday, which consists of two judges appointed by Republican Tim Pawlenty, one appointed by Independent Jesse Ventura, and one elected in a nonpartisan election.

I have an announcement about these appointments. For those of you who have followed this recount, which has been just as disgusting as the actual campaign, it might be somewhat surprising. I will not be attacking the character, competence, or motivations of these Republican-appointed judges. In fact, I will respect their decisions as arbiters of Minnesota’s top-notch election process.

If only that commitment was shared by everyone. Unfortunately, those on the right seem to sense that they can only triumph in the recount by dragging our election officials so far into the mud that they can never recover. I’m thinking in particularly about Republican slime-thrower Michael Brodkorb, who should be ashamed of his part in this recount process. While our Secretary of State and our county and city election officials were making sure every vote counted, Brodkorb was on the sidelines, questioning their competence and integrity. It would be putting it mildly to call that behavior disgusting. Brodkorb will apparently do or say absolutely anything to win. It makes me wonder: what were the principles that led him to get involved in politics in the first place?
