The only problem with a Democratic administration
With every upside, there’s always a downside. For Democrats, the downside of the Obama election is that his administration will suck up a lot of top talent. Case in point: Janet Napolitano of Arizona. Here are a few excerpts from other bloggers who’ve been following Napolitano’s prospects for 2010:
Napolitano was everyone’s favorite to run for Senate in 2010…
Popular incumbent Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano is term-limited, and she seems to be everyone’s first choice to run for the Senate seat of John McCain, which will also be up in 2010. It remains to be seen whether McCain will run for another term (I bet not, but you never know), but Napolitano’s name has already been floated as a potential Attorney General pick in the Obama Administration, which would take the most obvious choice off the table.
Just how far has John McCain’s stock fallen? According to a recent Rocky Mountain poll, he could face double digit defeat… in 2010. Yeah, even in Arizona, his home state, his popularity is less than 50%. The Rocky Mountain poll has popular Governor Janet Napolitano beating him 47% to 36% head-to-head.
…then she got picked for the Attorney General job.
Not only will Democrats lose Napolitano as a crucial ally–they will also have to contend with her constitutionally mandated successor, Secretary of State Jan Brewer, a rank-and-file Republican elected in 2002.
Obviously, the main reason for Obama’s choice (if the reports are accurate) is that he likes and trusts Napolitano–one of his early, steadfast supporters–and thinks she would do a good job. But, again, if a secondary priority is wooing McCain, you could hardly think of a better way to do it. McCain said this week that he intends to run for reelection in 2010, and by far the largest obvious obstacle for him was Napolitano…
Will Obama’s victory cost Democrats the Arizona gubernatorial and senatorial races in 2010? It’s a pretty good possibility.
