Best of the Daily Liberal
The posts below are some that I consider to be my best to date. To see some of my readers’ favorite posts, see “Popular Posts” in the sidebar at right.
Research
- Pawlenty’s Bad Deal uses a simple graph to show how Governor Tim Pawlenty’s “no new taxes pledge” has led directly to massive property tax increases in Minnesota.
- In the Daily Liberal Mapping Project, I used maps of each Congressional District to discuss Minnesota’s voting tendencies and suggest strategies for this year’s candidates. In my analysis of CD 6, I suggested that turnout could make the difference in the matchup between Elwyn Tinklenberg and Michele Bachmann.
- In my series on Norm Coleman’s voting record, I used data on floor votes to chronicle Coleman’s record on a number of issues. One good example is Coleman’s out-of-touch record: education.
Elections
- I was one of the first to call out John McCain’s “suspension” of his campaign as a cynical gimmick.
- I have written several pieces begging for civility in politics. In one, I explain how game theory explains the negativity of today’s politics.
- In Obama vs. McCain: finally a change in the American political process? I suggest how the presidential candidates could rescue the American political process. It hasn’t happened.
- In an article about the state of Minnesota’s Senate race, I list 4 things the Franken campaign needs to do to turn the race around.
- Writing early about the 2010 Minnesota gubernatorial election, I pleaded with former House Majority Leader Matt Entenza not to wage a costly primary battle.
Policy
- I provide a detailed explanation of the housing crisis and how it happened in The housing crisis explained: It’s a failure of the free market.
- I was one of a few liberal bloggers to support the bailout of our financial system; in this post, I try to explain why we need it.
- Drill in ANWR, save $1 per barrel uses the Bush administration’s own research to show that drilling in ANWR would only save us $1 per barrel of oil by 2030.
- In Pawlenty unable to understand local government finance, I use a short analogy to show why Tim Pawlenty’s “tax relief” isn’t relief at all.
- About a month before a California vote on same-sex marriage, I explained why I support equal marriage.
